Formed to provide a voice for cyclists in the Stratford-upon-Avon area - Shakespokes is not a club but an organisation of volunteers promoting cycling for health, leisure and pleasure - seeking better conditions for cycling, safer roads, and more people on bikes.

Shakespokes Leisure Rides

On the First and Third Sundays of each month throughout the year there are organised rides where everyone is welcome - they all start at the American Memorial in Stratford Market Place at 10.00 for a prompt departure - just turn up and join in !

¨ First Sunday rides are planned for between 30 and 40 miles (usually with options for short-cuts!) and finish by 1600

¨ Third Sunday rides are planned for between 15 and 20 miles and finish by 1400

Both rides are for the leisure cyclist, at a pace that will be appropriate to the group, once out of Stratford the routes follow quiet lanes through the countryside and are suitable for most types of bicycle. A coffee and/or lunch stop will be at a pub/cafe, or bring a picnic. The rides are FREE and there is no Shakespokes membership fee.

First Sunday Rides

1 May - 5 Jun - 3 Jul - 7 Aug - 4 Sep - 2 Oct

Third Sunday Rides

15 May* - 19 Jun - 17 Jul - 21 Aug - 18 Sep - 16 Oct

NOTE : The start time, throughout the year, is 10.00 - and that means departure at 10.00!

The ride on Sunday 15th May will visit the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Hampton Wood, leaving Stratford at 10.00, returning at approx 15.30

A leisurely ride via Loxley to Hampton Wood (1 mile south of Sherbourne)   where a member of the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust will give us a short guided tour of this ancient woodland reserve - bring a picnic lunch for afterwards. We will then re-trace our steps to Stratford.

STOP PRESS : Bike Week events in June will be detailed here soon!

The 7 September 2003 ride was our first Awayday - taking the train to Birmingham Moor St and riding back, approx 38 easy miles, mostly using National Cycle Network Route 5 to Stratford

Stratford to Birmingham, April 2004

Sunday 4 April 2004 saw us break our “bikes on the train” record with a total of 14 machines on the Awayday re-run when we took the train from Stratford-upon-Avon to Birmingham and cycled back.

We managed to completely fill the cycle storage and the adjoining compartment with bikes as the two pictures on the left show.

.... and finally .... there is now a cafe on The Greenway (National Cycle Network Route 5) at Milcote. It’s in a splendid old railway carriage, is run by Jane and serves all the cycling favourites!
